Yoga, my passion and a part of my life for over Five and a half years. A truly reflective practice internally and externally, freeing the body, mind and soul. Over the years of teaching in studio’s, in personals and on YouTube I have found love for many of the different Asana’s. This week I wanted to really focus on the Asana/Pose - Camel Pose or in Sanskrit, known as Ustrasana.
Camel Pose in its full expression is done when kneeling hip width apart, thighs parallel with the mat, tops of the feet pressing against the floor (this is shown with the modification of the toes being tucked to practice reaching back easier). Bending back with the arms, to connect our palms to our heels - all while lifting our hips forward, and heart up. Watch this quick instructional video taken from a YouTube class - 45 Minute Heart Opener.
One little note I always recommend to be fully warmed up before going into these deep backbends.
As my husband and I expand our hO’Me to all of you, I find myself wanting to open my heart more. Camel pose in my mind has to be one of the most amazing heart opening postures. This pose is very deep backbend that truly lifts our heart outwards, and can literally increase our heart rate.
The depth of the backbend in Camel also really places us in a pose to tune into our mind, body and breath. There are a variety of muscles involved in these deep backbends, as we work into them we also must listen within. Our ego may push us to a point beyond where our physical body can take us and lead to injury. However, listening in and feeling every facet of muscle as we work backwards, can truly open up a new level of understanding within our self.
We may not find full expression right away, Yoga is an evolving journey, easing our bodies into poses through our breath and quieting the mind in the process, finding the true spirit within ourselves. I hope to see you on you mat and expanding your journey!
