As we embark on a New Year and new resolutions, this may speak to our souls. Or maybe we are simply looking for a good solid green smoothie that isn’t banana based, this does the trick too! This smoothie fills me up with out filling me out or adding toxins to my body, and of course, it is wonderfully nutritious and filled with antioxidants (perfect after a time of overindulgence).
I was looking for a solid green protein smoothie back in the middle of 2016 and I found this wonderful smoothie from Oh She Glows (http://ohsheglows.com/2014/03/31/green-warrior-protein-smoothie/) and I fell in love! I only made a few changes, one of them being a challenge I had and have, I am allergic to hemp and my body doesn't process protein powders well. So, I set off to find another option that would pack in the protein and not take away from the yummy flavor of this smoothie, the best option I found was raw organic cashews! They contain lots of protein, healthy fats and tons of minerals and vitamin (read more here: http://www.livestrong.com/article/385063-raw-cashews-benefits/). I also didn't have any mint on hand the first time I made it, so I added my Peppermint Vitality Oil (when using oils for internal use, please be sure that they are labeled specifically for dietary use and from a trusted company, here are the ones I use:www.youngliving.com/en_US/products/peppermint-vitality-5ml) and oh man! This smoothie was and is O'Mazing! I have it at least 3 times a week.
Here are some health benefits:
Grapefruit: contains fiber, potassium, lycopene and Vitamin C
Cucumber: contains antioxidants that help fight cancer and inflammation, supports the digestive tract, helps maintain healthy weight.
Celery: contains dietary fiber, vitamins A and K, potassium and folate
Apple: contains phytonutrients and and antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, boost digestion and reduces inflammation.
Coconut: contains healthy fats (MCFAs), reduces inflammation and arthritis, antiviral and anti fungal (supports our immune system), boots metabolism and lowers risk of heart disease.
Cashew: good source of protein, healthy fats and are filled with vitamins and minerals (refer to link above for more info).
Mango: contains antioxidant compounds that have been found to protect against cancers, lowers cholesterol, aides in digestion and alkalizes the body.
Here’s how I subbed out to make it Mary friendly:
The original recipe calls for algae, however I omit this because it didn’t speak to me. Feel free to follow Oh She Glows that I linked above if you’d like to add it.
I use 1/4 cup raw organic cashews (soaked overnight for easier digestion) for 1/4 cup of hemp
I use 3-4 drops of Peppermint Vitality Oil in place of the fresh mint. I have used both fresh and the oil and personally prefer the oil, I love mint and this made it taste like a mint milkshake only without all the junk and dairy! Score!!
Add all ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth and enjoy! (I use a Vitamix, this one here and love it! https://www.amazon.com/Vitamix-5300-Blender-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B01688AFFC/ref=sr_1_3?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1483507924&sr=1-3&keywords=vitamix) I hope this smoothie brings your body and tummy the satisfaction that it did mine. From my heart and hO’Me to yours!
